Google isn’t Going Anywhere, but that Doesn’t Mean you Can’t.

What, where, when, why and how – whatever the question, Google probably knows the answer.

Still, and despite dominating over 64.5% of the current US market, there are other search engines out there – lots, actually. Offering untapped SEO opportunities for businesses, bloggers, and individuals, each one of these “Google alternatives” uses its own independent algorithm and pagerank criteria, meaning that in 2015 your SEO designation doesn’t have to be a one-trick pony.

When it comes to search engine optimization, it’s okay to need more. But, while the possibility of increased exposure with Google sounds great in theory, it means increased competition in actuality. While focusing on your brand development, brand identity, and social media marketing, remember: it’s much easier to make number one on a number two search engine – but, which one?

Gigablast, Dogpile, Excite, HotBot, the list goes on. Although there are a wide variety of search engines, not all of them are relevant, and not all of them are worth investing time in SEO research.

Instead, focus on the top three:

Bing

With a 19.8% query rate as of 2015, Bing (formerly known as Windows or MSN Live Search) was Microsoft’s tacit attempt at taking down Google’s search engine reign in 2009. Using a customized search index known as Tiger, Bing aims to deliver faster, more relevant search results.

Ranked 23rd by ALEXA (Actionable Analytics for the Web) Bing still has a long way to go before it can go toe-to-toe with search super-giant Google, but it’s still worth a second look for SEO purposes.

Yahoo!Search

Coming in at number three as the most widely-used search engine in the USA with a 12.8% query rate, Yahoo was first launched in 1994 and until 2004, was actually powered by Google. Now powered by Bing it is ranked 5th by ALEXA making it a smart and viable marketing option.

Ask.com

Another ’90s survivor, Ask.com was launched in 1995 as the question-and-answer search engine Ask Jeeves. Ranked 44th by ALEXA and typically bundled with freeware programs such as Java or Shockwave, the Ask.com toolbar has the potential to reach a variety of users via direct download making it a serious marketing tool.

Keep your Friends Close, and Your Search Engine Closer.

In 2015, the reality is that Google is still a hot commodity – but, fame is a fickle friend and up-and-comers can appear anytime, from anywhere, so remember: you don’t have be exclusive. Once you have narrowed down your list of potential alternatives, you may still rely on Google for the majority of your networking, but there is never a good reason not to take advantage of low-hanging fruit. From established brands like Bing to new contenders like the popular DuckDuckGo, the internet is changing and you should be ready to adapt.

Meet, mingle, and most of all, don’t be afraid to tell Google you want to see other search engines. Who knows, you might even find “the one”.
